In St. John’s, Newfoundland, Farrell was one of nine children born to Arthur and Elizabeth Farrell.

She attended Holy Heart of Mary Regional High School for her education and began singing at a young age.

At the Kiwanis Music Festival, she took home a number of prizes.

Mary Lou Farrell was chosen as Miss Newfoundland in 1964 and later that year she was named Miss Dominion of Canada.

She later competed in the Miss World pageant and finished second.
